Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why am I not seeing real-time departure times?
A: This could be due to several reasons:
- Check your internet connection - the app requires network access to fetch live data from 511.org
- Ensure your API key is valid (Settings → API Key). The default key should work for most users.
- Caltrain may not be running at the current time (late night, early morning, or holidays)
- Try pulling down to refresh the departure list
Q: How do I change my departure and destination stations?
A: There are two modes:
- Specific Stations Mode (default): Tap the ⚙️ Settings icon, then select your morning and afternoon departure/destination stations from the dropdowns.
- Use Nearest Station Mode: Toggle "Use Nearest Station" in Settings. The app will automatically detect your nearest Caltrain station using your location. You only need to select your destination.
Q: What's the difference between "Morning Destination" and "Afternoon Destination"?
A: DudeWhereIsMyCaltrain is designed for commuters who travel in different directions at different times of day:
- Morning Destination: Where you're going in the morning (e.g., San Francisco for work)
- Afternoon Destination: Where you're going in the afternoon/evening (e.g., San Jose Diridon to go home)
- The app automatically shows the relevant section first based on time of day (before noon = morning first, after noon = afternoon first)
Q: Why is the app asking for location permission?
A: Location permission is only requested if you enable "Use Nearest Station" mode in Settings. This allows the app to automatically detect which Caltrain station is closest to you. If you prefer not to share your location, use "Specific Stations" mode instead, where you manually select your departure station.
Q: What do the colored dots next to train times mean?
A: The colored indicators show train status:
- 🟢 Green: On time
- 🟡 Yellow: Delayed 1-5 minutes
- 🔴 Red: Delayed more than 5 minutes
- ⚪ Gray: Already departed
Q: What does "Train skips this station" warning mean?
A: Some Caltrain trains are express or limited-stop services that skip certain stations. If you see a yellow badge warning "Skips departure station" or "Skips destination", that train will NOT stop at your station - do not board it! Only trains without this warning will stop at both your departure and destination stations.
Q: How do I see which stations a train stops at?
A: Tap on any train card in the departure list to see a detailed timeline of all intermediate stations and estimated arrival times. This helps you plan your journey and see which stations the train will stop at.
Q: Can I use a custom 511.org API key?
A: Yes! If you have your own 511.org API key:
- Go to Settings → API Key
- Paste your API key
- The app will use your key for all future requests
- Get a free API key at 511.org/open-data/token
Q: Why isn't the widget showing live data?
A: Widgets refresh on their own schedule determined by iOS:
- iOS manages widget refresh based on battery, usage patterns, and other factors
- Widgets typically update every 15-60 minutes
- Open the main app to see the most up-to-date departure times
- Widget data is cached and may show slightly older information
Q: How do I switch between light and dark mode?
A: Go to Settings and toggle the "Dark Mode" switch. The app defaults to dark mode, but you can switch to light mode anytime.
Q: The app shows "--:--:--" for departure times. What does this mean?
A: This is a placeholder shown when:
- No trains are currently scheduled (late night, early morning, or holidays)
- No live data is available from 511.org
- Check your internet connection and try refreshing
Q: How accurate are the arrival times and travel durations?
A: Departure times come directly from 511.org's real-time API and are highly accurate. Arrival times and travel durations are calculated by the app based on:
- Real-time departure information from your departure station
- Real-time expected arrival at your destination station
- The difference between these times gives you the actual travel duration
- Arrival times account for delays and are updated in real-time
Known Issues
- Background refresh disabled: Automatic background updates are currently disabled. Open the app to refresh departure times.
- Widget location updates: Widgets in "Use Nearest Station" mode may take longer to update location compared to the main app.

DudeWhereIsMyCaltrain uses real-time transit data from:
- 511.org Transit API: Provides live departure and arrival information for all Caltrain stations
- Data accuracy: Data is as accurate as what 511.org receives from Caltrain
- Coverage: All Caltrain stations from San Francisco to Gilroy
